User Guide & Mechanics

How the Tip Calculator Works

Our calculator takes the guesswork out of bill splitting and tipping. Here is a comprehensive walkthrough of each step, the underlying mathematics, and practical examples.

1

Enter Your Bill Amount

Type in your base restaurant, café, or service charge in the "Bill Amount" input. You can pick your local currency from the dropdown (USD, EUR, GBP, INR, CAD, AUD, JPY, etc.), which will immediately format currency symbols and decimal places.

2

Choose or Customize Tip Percentage

Select one of our quick presets: 5%, 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, or 25%. Need a specific custom percentage like 16.5% or 22%? Click Custom and type any decimal percentage.

3

Specify the Number of People

Use the plus (+) and minus (−) stepper buttons or enter a number directly. The calculator dynamically distributes the bill, tip, and grand total equally among all diners.

4

Optional: Add Tax & Configure Calculation Rules

Expand the Add Tax accordion if you wish to compute sales tax or VAT. You can also toggle whether gratuity is computed strictly on the subtotal (standard etiquette) or on the subtotal plus tax.

5

Apply Rounding & Share or Copy Results

Choose whether to round up or down to whole monetary units. Once done, click Copy Result to send a neat itemized summary to your group chat or use Share to send a pre-filled link.

Real-World Example: Group Dinner

Imagine 4 friends dining out at an Italian bistro with the following receipt:

  • Food & Drinks Subtotal: $160.00
  • State Sales Tax (8.5%): $13.60
  • Gratuity Rate (20%): Calculated on subtotal ($160.00 × 0.20 = $32.00)
  • Total Payable: $160.00 + $13.60 + $32.00 = $205.60

Result Split Across 4 People:

$51.40 per person (includes $8.00 tip per person)
